Ipoh, Los Prisioneros, and Photography Zines [6/9 2025]

Recommendations from Me

This year I made two photography zines. I really loved the process, and so I want to use this newsletter to encourage you to make one too!

The zine format is versatile enough that you can transform any one of your interests, through images and text, into a beautiful and self-contained project. They also serve as a really lovely record of your life. From now on, I’m determined to make at least a few each year, and to grow a small library through which I can mark the passing of time.

In my zines, I chose to use high-contrast, lightly distorted, and black-and-white photographs (somewhat similar to the style of Daido Moriyama’s photography). This made printing cheap and forgiving, but the biggest benefit is that it allowed me to revisit and crop old photographs I had initially discarded.

If you would like to receive the zines I made, just drop me a message with your address. If you pay for postage, I’d be very happy to send them to you! And if you’re interested in making a zine yourself, please know that you will have at least one very excited reader (me)!

Recommendations from Others

Tisha 2023

‘i) The buildings of B.M. Iversen, a great architect of Ipoh and modern Malaya.’

Maxi 2023

‘My favourite Chilean and Argentinean music artists: Los Jaivas, Usted Señalemelo, Facundo Cabral, Gauchito Club, Él Mató a un Policía Motorizado, Conociendo Rusia, Mon Laferte, Los Prisioneros, Los Bunkers, Matanza, Nicola Cruz, Tata Barahona.’

James 2023

‘Much loved masala chai recipe – 2 tbsp Assam tea (loose), 12 cardamom pods, 5 cloves, 3 cm fresh ginger (sliced), 1–1½ tsp black peppercorns, 50 g sugar, 500 ml oat milk.’

Scout 2023

‘With many things (remembering being an example), trying or forcing can be exhausting, unsustainable, even counterproductive. Instead it can be better to welcome the possibility of the thing, nurture and feed the thing you want to see, and let it grow in its own time.’

Hannes 2023

‘You should buy some camping gear and walk/hike into some beautiful area that’s hard to get to, then spend a night there, looking at the stars, snuggling up in your sleeping bag, listening to the wind blowing and the leaves moving. Chances are you will have an experience in which you think you might die. I have found this to be super relaxing and healthy in the long term.’
